For much of the novel, Theo is certain that his actions are dictated by his mother's death, which is symbolized by his possession of the Goldfinch. When Theo discovers that Boris stole the painting, however, he begins to question that fate. He makes his way to Hobie's store, led there by the ring given to him after his mother's death, and through this visit he creates connections for life. In the novel, we have to consider whether it was his fate in receiving the ring or his free will in choosing to pursue the rings owner that caused Theo to form lifelong passions and connections.
