Their main job seems to be to find out the qualities of the people they encounter. While they hope to find goodness, charity, and honesty, they encounter people who have all bad vices and seem to have no redeeming qualities. When a poor prostitute takes the gods in, there seems to be some hope for mankind, and the gods actually supply her with some money to begin a life that could lead to prosperity. However, it does not work out the way the gods hoped, and many sad events follow.
