The grand inquisitor short story
In the first temptation, Satan command Jesus to "turn these stones into bread, thereby proving you are a divine being, and erasing all doubt as to whether or not you're the Messiah." Christ, howeverm refuses, responding, "Man cannot live on bread alone," which is generally believed to mean that people need spiritual sustenance, as well as physical sustenance, that people need to have faith in something bigger than themselves. The Inquisitor contends that had Christ's answer is wrong because if he had turned the stones to bread, He could have become the all powerful, a divine king over all, with no room for argument.
