1. Basically Muley fills him in on the great exodus of farmers. Muley himself looks like an old ghost haunting land that used to be his. Tom realises that the farms are basically done. Life as he knew it will never be the same. Tom also realizes that he will be breaking his parole if he leaves the state with his family.
2. Muley thinks he is going to starve haunting his old place. He says that they are technically trespassers.
3. Tom feels that he did what he had to do. He feels no guilt or shame about killing the man and would do it again given the same circumstances. He doesn't seem terribly bitter about imprisonment because he did do the crime. Tom is bitter about the government. He is angry at a government who could let the banks destroy so many families and sit idly by while children go hungry.
