How does Tommy's "I will be there" speech symbolize the American spirit?
Tom decides that he is going to become a force of justice rather than a passive worker who survives from day today. Tom represents the American ethos of the individual making a difference against overwhelming forces. Tom becomes an idea that is difficult to extinguish.
