When forced to give up so much, the Joads question their faith in a higher power. Reverend John Casy, an honorary member of the Joad family, is a quiet man, but he is constantly thinking about God in The Grapes of Wrath and about the ways in which humans' souls are connected. He has given up the priesthood, having been a lecherous and rule-breaking preacher, but he still deeply considers the existence of God and the importance of religion in uniting and inspiring people.
