What is the role of the truck driver?

The truck driver represents goodness in a bad place....... he represents the "random act of kindness" that everyone should remember to bestow on someone everyday. He wasn't allowed to pick up hitchhikers, and he didn't necessarily trust Tom Joad, but he did recognize another human being in need, and he acted upon his conscience.
