Why is it fitting that Grandpa and Grandma never make it to California ?

Grandma and Grandpa never wanted to make it to California. They didn't want to leave their home, and they didn't want to accompany the rest of the family. The heartbreak they suffered in watching everything they'd worked for disappear had taken away their ability to dream. They didn't see a future, especially one in which they weren't together. As far as they could see, they had no future.
