What is the meaning of this motion/ motif

In the movie there is repetion of a certain motion. After a part Gatsby and Nick are talking and her makes a motion that curls upward and loops down as he throws something into the pool. At the top of the loop the camera pans upward towards a shooting star. This motion is also repeated in the begining of the movie with a red plane whil Nick and Gatsby are traveling over a bridge to the luncheon. Just wondering what the meaning of the motif is.
