I think we are all guilty of what Holden calls being a "phoney" Holden is less guilty in that it is always on his mind. Holden tends to be materialistic and on the lecherous side but I think he recognizes this. Holden tires of people and their "phoniness" but thinks he would make "wrong kind of monk" if he was alone with books all day. Holden likes nuns. He thinks their modest lifestyles are authentic. Holden likes the fact that, the ones he sees, "never go anywhere swanky for lunch."
There are so many things wrong with Holden. Actually there is a bit of Holden in most of us, it's only magnified in Holden. He suffers from a sort of clinical depression. He obsesses about his dead brother and feels himself disappearing, As he crosses the road he tells his dead brother,"Don't let me disappear".
