Gatsby has based his life on an illusion He thinks he can cut out the past and live a life with Daisy: a life that is suspended above the world and immune to the anguish that is such a big part of life. When a third person comes into Gatsby's illusion, it begins to crash. As much as Gatsby would like to erase the last five years, he cannot. Reality has a way of destroying his illusion.
