We get the sense of Mr. Gatz is a sad little man really not knowing who his son was or what activities (illigeal and others) he had been involved in. I really like the quote when he tells Nick what his son could have done,
“If he’d of lived, he’d of been a great man. A man like James J. Hill. He’d of helped build up the country.”
“That’s true,” I said, uncomfortably.
Ironically Gatz was not far off. Gatsby could have been great, he just had the misfortune of being born poor.
