Compare George Wilson and Tom Buchanan.

Wilson was devastated by the knowledge his wife was having an affair. He loved Myrtle and wanted his marriage to survive. His solution was to get the money together to move away and start over. Unfortunately, she died before he could take her away.

Tom's reaction to Daisy's infidelity was a blow to his manhood. He wasn't as upset about the adultery, as he was upset about who she had an affair with. To Tom, Gatsby was an upstart, an unthinkable companion..... it was almost as if the entire affair was simply an insult to his manhood. Tom knew his wife would never leave him because of what it would do to her reputation.... an affair was acceptable.... love and divorce were not.
