Gatsby seems unable to react to Daisy's presence with any grace and dignity; he is completely taken aback by seeing her after all this time. She reacts with such emotion because she says she has never seen anything so "beautiful." As we read later in the book, we believe that perhaps her life has lacked beauty for many years.
