The Great Gatsby
Describe the relationship between Tom and Daisy and how they interact with each other. What evidence suggests their marriage is not happy? Why do you suppose they stay together?
Chapter 1
Chapter 1
In Chapter One, we see that Tom and Daisy can be congenially critical with one another. We know that their marriage is far from perfect when Jordan informs Nick that Tom has a woman in New York. We can assume they stay together because divorce was frowned upon at the time, and the couple had a young daughter.
“You mean to say you don’t know?” said Miss Baker, honestly surprised. “I thought everybody knew.”
“I don’t.”
“Why ——” she said hesitantly, “Tom’s got some woman in New York.”
