Nick is not as obsessed with Daisy as Gatsby is. By using Nick, the reader gets a somewhat more balanced picture of what is going on between Daisy, Tom, Gatsby, and Tom's lover. He is Daisy's cousin, but he is not nearly as involved in the entire story except that Gatsby wants him to help bring Daisy back into Gatsby's life.
