For what reason does the author use the paragraph beginning with Daisy questioning “Why Candles”?

She pinches or snuffs out the candle with her fingers.I think Fitsgerald is trying to show Daisy as one who puts up with punishment, from Tom, as well as the physcal punishment from pinching the candles.
