Possibly, Gatsby never actually thought of his dream as unattainable. He believed that if he made himself financially worthy, he'd fit into the circles Daisy moved in and sweep her off of her feet. He never thought she'd refuse, and yet, he never banked on her attachment to her husband, her name, and the status she would lose by being with him...... not to mention the little girl that called her Mommy.
