Gatsby has been separated from Daisy by both geography and circumstance. His West Egg mansion allows him to see the light from Daisy's dock. He is seen in Chapter 2 -
'his arms towards the dark water'
reaching out to his lost love. In Chapter 5, Gatsby and Daisy meet again and are tactfully left alone together by Nick. There seems to be a reconciliation between them and this may mean he no longer needs to look at her from a distance: they are moving in the same circles again and he will strive to win her back.
