Tom Buchanan's racism is evident from the very beginning of the novel when he advises that "it's up to us (white people), who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things" He feels the colored hordes might take over America. Tom's racism is just another example of his very superficial, entitled and just hateful personality. Tom is concerned with himself. The nonsense that spews out of his mouth is a reflection on his own insecurities and general ignorance about other people.
