how does awareness of gatsby motivations and decisions affect our assessment of gatsby

The fact that Gatsby's motivations come purely from dreams and attaining the one woman he's dreamed of his entire adult life evokes a sympathy in the reader that we otherwise would not feel. Let's face it, he's trying to steal another man's wife and break up a family.... that's not something we are usually sympathetic about!
