The Great Gatsby

How does the passage suggest a divided point of view? In what ways is Nick "within and without'' at the same time? How do you think his being simultaneously "within and without" will affect his role as narrator in the rest of the novel?

Chapter 2

Nick describes how he felt sitting in the apartment during Tom and Myrtle's party

...high over the city our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was with him too. looking up and wondering. l was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled...

There is a paradox here. Nick sees the grand misery of the city. He is simultaneously enchanted and repelled.
