Tom Buchanan is a symbol of the alpha male nouveau riche. He is superficial and just a nasty human being. He epitomizes what revolts Nick about East Egg society. Tom damages all around him because he really only cares about his own desires. Really Tom not only destroys the people around him, he slowly destroys himself. As he alienates and bullies his "friends" and even his wife Daisy, he isolates himself.
