How has Meyer Wolfsheim impacted the novel?

Wolfsheim and his business/ friendship with Gatsby adds an air of mystery to the novel. When we meet Wolfsheim, we've already been inundated with rumors about Gatsby's past. Wolfsheim opens the door that allows us to see beyond Gatsby's facade and realize that not all of the rumors are unwarranted.
