The Great Gatsby

"I was looking at an elegant young roughneck...whose elaborate formality of speech just missed being absurd. Some time before he introduced himself I'd got a strong impression that he was picking his words with care." What is Fitzgerald tying to convey?

Chapter 3. How should we feel about Gatsby here?

Fitzgerald is conveying Gatsby's care in appearing or deceiving people into believing he is exactly what he wants them to believe. His actions are well thought out..... they are not natural.
