In Chapters 1-3 , how does the figurative language assist in telling the story?

Fitzgerald's text is filled with figurative language. I don't think you could turn a page without finding something to analyze and enjoy. This language assists in telling the story because the reader can visualize everything through the words he uses. Figurative language allows us to envision the settings inside and out, down to the breezes that move through the rooms. The characters come alive, you can hear Daisy's laugh, you can feel Gatsby's devotion. The East and West Eggs are visible in our minds, whereas the Valley of Ashes becomes the epitome of "slumming."
