The Great Gatsby

Nick's impression of Gatsby?

Nick states, "I was looking at an elegant young roughneck... whose elaborate formality of speech just missed being absurd. Some time before he introduced himself I'd got a strong impression that he was picking his words with care" (Fitzgerald 48). What is Nick's impression of Gatsby at this point?

At this very early stage in the novel, Nick finds Gatsby somewhat of an enigma.... he finds Gatsby both intriguing and mysterious. Nick wants to figure him out.
