This entire novel revolves around Gatsby's hopes and dreams. These are the things he has lived and work towards since the day he met Daisy prior to leaving for the war. Fitzgerald's use of these words speaks to the difficuty and irrational thought behind placing all of your dreams upon one particular thing..... which in this case is the love of a woman.
