This quote relates directly to Gatsby, who has spent his life pursuing a dream that no longer exists. Everything he has done in his life was specifically intended to make himself worthy of the girl of his dreams (Daisy). Unfortunately, the girl never really existed in the way he saw her...... the dream was impossible because she was already married, and the life, that was impossible to because Gatsby's life and social status could never align itself with Daisy's world.
