What is the significance of chapter 4 when the gatsby and nick cross the queensboro bridge?

As they cross the bridge, Nick is thinking about all of the hopes and dreams to be found in the city. Ironically, just as he's thinking these optimistic thoughts a funeral precession passes by, which serves to remind him that all dreams and all lives end in death.
