The Valley of ashes exists between East Egg and New York City. It represents the moral and social decay of American society: the death of the American Dream. While the rich like Gatsby and Tom indulge in limitless wealth, the Valley holds the poor and disillusioned, like George, who desperately want a piece of wealth that will only remain an illusion to them.
