Catherine is described as a girl about 30 trying desperately to look younger and, in her eyes, more attractive. Catherine's, "eye-brows had been plucked and then drawn on again at a more rakish angle, but the efforts of nature toward the restoration of the old alignment gave a blurred air to her face. " Fitzgerald seems to imply that she would look much better without the garish make-up and jewelry. The natural beauty has covered up with the unreal representation of a caricature rather than a real woman.
