The Great Gatsby
THE GREAT GATSBY Positive and negative effects of Gatsby's decision to his life?
Analysis
Analysis
The positives are many. Gatsby is an enigma. He has a mysterious quality about him that makes his character compelling. He is a filthy rich businessman that, unlike the rest of East Egg, does not come from old money. The fact that he made much of his money by bootlegging, during prohibition, makes him look like a brilliant rebel rather than a criminal (some may disagree with me on this). Gatsby has class and style: he remains hidden at most of his parties. He also achieves everything for the love of a woman rather than money. The negatives mainly surround Gatsby's empty life. He pines away for Daisy, a woman that clearly does not deserve that much dedication. Gatsby more than loves Daisy: he is obsessed with her. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy is largely based on illusion; he is in love with the idea of her and not the actual person.
