The Great Gatsby, The End

Why Nick? Fitzgerald could have chosen any perspective for his point of view but he chooses first person narration, and he developed Mr. Carraway for a purpose. Why? Based of what you've read, what do you think Nick's role is?

Nick's role is the observer.... he is the man who with certainty claims to be nonjudgmental. He provides the story with balance and insight. In the end, however, Nick has to admit certain truths to himself based upon his experiences. The events he witnessed firsthand no longer leave him with the ability to be nonjudgmental, and in the end, he goes home.... back to the Midwest and embracing the values he was raised with.
