This quote encompasses the full affect of the "mystery" that is Gatsby. He's an enigma, fodder for the gossips. He has captured the imaginations of everyone around him, and the big question is simple...... who is Gatsby? Is he dangerous, a criminal, a thief, a gangster...... all of these things make him desirable..... more exciting.
