What is the purpose of the last section of this chapter that begins, "Reading over what I have written for..."?

Nick is trying to state, perhaps too strongly, that he was not immediately drawn into Gatsby and the world of East Egg. I'm not sure the reader can entirely trust Nick on this comment.
