Why did Gatsby Nick about his past? What was Nick's reaction?

Gatsby seems to feel he can be open with Nick and tell him the truth about his past. He also wants to use Nick, who is Daisy's cousin, to see if he can arrange a rendezvous between Gatsby and Nick.

He basically wanted to control the information that Nick gets: he wanted Nick to think well of him.
