I think that like Gatsby, Daisy lived in an illusion. She had an idealized view of the world. When she began feeling real emotions for Gatsby, she panicked to the only thing she knew. Although Tom was abusive, Daisy felt at home in the superficial, emotionally stagnant and financial excesses of her world.
