Because Gatsby feels the need to impress Daisy, and he knows that Nick has invited her, as well as himself, over for tea. Therefore Gatsby sends lots of flowers to Nick's small cottage type thing, and also a man to mow his grass. It's just another way Gatsby is trying to impress Daisy.

It was initially awkward as Gatsby was nervous.
