How does Darun handle the situation with the prisoner?

After Balducci leaves Daru eats with the prisoner. This really confuses the Arab; he has never shared food with a French man. Daru takes the Arab prisoner to the top of a large hill. He gives the Arab some food and money. He lets the Arab decide if he wants to go to the police station in Tinguit or take his chances with nomadic tribes to the South. As Daru leaves  the Arab he sees him turning east to the French police station.
