Explain how the U.S. government was initially overthrown and women lost their rights. Does this seem like a plausible series of events? Why or why not?

I do not recall the details but I do remember that a totalitarian theocracy had overthrown the government. A huge decline in fertility precipitates this chaos. This very conservative offshoot of Christianity believed in the complete subservience and control of women.
