The Handmaids Tale: Chapter 46

In Chapter 46, Offred repeatedly states, "I could...". Analyze how these "I could"s, as well as her closing statement, "Whether this is my end or a new beginning I have no way of knowing; I have given myself over into the hands of strangers, because it can't be helped. And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light" are consistent with the character we have come to know.

Offred is always looking at her options, particularly in this chapter. Unfortunately, the options she presents to herself aren't really options at all. Setting fire to the house, breaking the window, killing herself, or even Serena.... talking to the Commander; walking out, running way..... all of these things are options, but none can be performed without repercussion. Thus she could, but she doesn't.... she simply concedes.
