What happens to the statue and the swallow at the end?

At the end of the story, the swallow dies at the statue's feet. In response, the statue cracks because of its sadness over the loss of the swallow..... his friend. The crack exposes the statue's heart.... which had never been seen from the outside. It was the most beautiful thing about him.
