Starr's relationship with her Uncle Carlos is more like that of a father and daughter. Uncle Carlos raised Starr during the three years her father spent in prison. He is a father figure and mentor. Uncle Carlos also serves as a bridge between Starr's two worlds.... the girl who lives in Garden Heights and goes to school at the prestigious Williamson. Starr trusts her uncle, and their relationship enables her to move forward..... he also defends his niece, and questions the police action that proved fatal for Kahlil, even if it means his own suspension (leave) from the force.
