What did Corrie and her family hide under the stairs? How are these items used? Why would they hide them

They hid jews under the stairs for the first question but i can't understand the second question

They were ordered to turn in all radios to the Germans so the real news could not be heard. I recall they turned in their portable radio and hid the big radio underneath the staircase. They wanted to hear the real news instead of German propaganda.
