Gorman's poem, titled “The Hill We Climb” combines the rhetoric of a speech with the cadence and rhythm of a sermon to present a prophetic vision of a possible future while acknowledging the mistakes of the past. The work is steeped in the dualistic imagery of the America that strives and the American that fails to present the everlasting note of optimistic that tomorrow can move us a little closer to the goal of a perfect union. We are “far from polished, far from pristine” and facing “an era of just redemption” that allows us “to leave behind a country better than the one we were left with.”
