What dose Bilbo want to happen in the siege between the dwarves and the humans/elves at the Gate?

Bilbo wants the siege to end in peace.... no battles, no bloodshed. He hopes that in giving the Arkenstone to Bard.... Bard will be able to negotiate an end that is satisfactory to everyone.
