First known outbreak- 1976 in N'zara, a town in southern Sudan
Second outbreak- Catholic mission village of Yambuku in north-central Zaire.
Third outbreak- Reston, Virginia
In the novel, each of these occurences is traced back to Kitum Cave in Africa.
