What is the mood of the following line? What is Preston trying to do here?

"What Gene did not realize was that there was another way into the back rooms. You could get there without breaking the sticky tape on the door." (275)

The mood is rather ominous...... Gene was certain that his actions were containing the area, and thus, put in place to keep everyone safe. The last sentence leaves us wondering what other way was there into the room..... and did that mean there was another way for the virus to escape?
