Niger spores were set out to access the success of their decon job. From the text;
At various places inside the monkey house, they set out patches of paper saturated with spores of a harmless bacterium known as Bacillus subtilis niger. These spores are hard to kill. It is believed that a decon job that kills niger will kill almost anything.Source(s)
